I officially have a custom domain! And I don't think anything broke... except for all the webrings I was in. All three broke so working to get that amended-- ah well!
I think it depends on the size and how they're run. like you said, large ones seem to lose their purpose, but like ones for specific content such as zines or writing can be useful to connect people looking for similar stuff. that's the thought i put into my theater webring, at least
im only in webrings for fun at this point. its nice to explore some sites that way but i dont feel i get any sort of "reach" so to speak. just doing it for the hell of it mostly. @uncannydream

@playneonneuro I went with Cloudflare! Though i know some use namecheap too. its about 10 bucks a year for my domain
