Sel Zhuni leaned over the railing of the Thavnairian galleon while absentmindedly adjusting her jet-black hair. This Miqo’te was no stranger to ocean travel, she had sailed with a pirate crew from eight years old through her early twenties. That Confederacy crew’s captain raised her as his own after her family didn’t survive the Garlean occupation of Doma. Once she had decided her life as a scoundrel was at its end, she landed in Kugane to seek more legitimate work.
Awed by a traveling arcanist performing for a crowd, she knew her next adventure: magic. He had a warm smile and warmer heart, taking her as his apprentice. They traveled to Thavnair and together wowed crowds with arcane showmanship. After a few years, Sel’s talents and aspirations outstripped his own.
His encouragement to study the more advanced art of summoning in Limsa Lominsa won her over. Now the Great Expanse’s infinite stars reflected in her ice-silver eyes while she gazed at the galleon’s wake behind. The ship would reach port later in the morning. She grinned as the chilled air tickled her feline ears.
Memories drifted lazily through her mind’s eye. The good–juggling dozens of fruits, vegetables, weapons, and one kitten thrown at her by a rowdy and cheering crowd. Also, the bad, such as when she nearly lost an eye drinking too much and swashbuckling with a samurai. While he and the crew found it entertaining, her captiain fiercy scolded her for the reckless behavior. Her facial markings were subtle, the scar from that incident less so.
Even the hardships of a pirate upbringing couldn’t remove her smile and this night was no exception as she silently returned to her quarters. Adventure was adventure and she could never have enough. She managed little more than a nap before the oak behemoth moored and the boatswain’s whistle woke all souls aboard.
Sel disembarked as quickly as possible, pressing through the crowd and rushing to her accommodations at the Mizzenmast Inn. After dropping off her trunk and a quick tour (at their insistence) Sel left straightaway for the Limsian Archanist’s Guild, pausing at the doors. One deep breath later, she passed through the threshold. Her letter of recommendation in hand, she began the next chapter of her life.
