(WIP!) My Drive Recovery Notes

Recovering data from old drives I buy cheap. Nothing special, just notes.

First Post!

Hi guys! I'll use this blog to document my tech endeavours. Specifically, I like recovering different stuff from old drives and other tech.

Let me tell you about my most interesting find yet:

About a year ago, I found a guy selling a whole box of old drives for cheap at the flea market. One item was especially cheap, an old broken camera wtih corrupted files on it.

To give you a picture of what i was greeted with when opening any of these, here's one i still havent managed to recover:

Corrupted Image

The few i did manage to salvage though, turned out to paint a picture of a weird cave with writings on the wall and stuff. If I manage to recover more, i will surely update you guys, this seems really interesting.

Old Windows 98 laptop still works

Got an old Toshiba working again. Seems to be old archived family photos and documents (wont post those!). But at least the images I post might survive longer on here.

FAMILY PHOTOS

That makes my bucket list empty. Kind of a relief but at the same time I'd hope to have more to post about for you guys.

Heads up: I won't be too active the next couple of weeks. I'm moving into a new apartment. When I'm ready to post again, you guys will be the first ones to know.

Moved into the new apartment

I'm close to done with moving into this place! Finally got the machine all set up (as evident by the fact I can post again) The previous tenant left some junk including some vintage camera storage (which im unfortunately unfamiliar with). I will try to get around to recovering as much as possible from this, pronto!

BTW! for anyone wondering what was in that one corrupted photo, i got it a bit more visible:

Less corrupted

I know it's not perfect, but i think you can pretty clearly see whats on it now.

I wasn't planning on recovering more from that camera, but i probably will after getting done with the stuff left behind by the previous tenant.

Mostly because I have to budget now that I'm spending a chunk of money on renting this place, life stuff comes first.

Big Catch

Good news! I'm all set up! Expect more deep dives into this drive, it seems pretty interesting:

Hundreds of photos, earliest from 1998, newest from this year! From the ones i recovered, and from cross referencing less corrupted ones, a lot of these are of this apartment, some surrounding areas as well.

I don't know this area too well, so it's hard for me to cross reference the locations in some of the outside photos, but i assume at least most are from the region.

Thinking about it, this was probably left here by the landlord, images of the apartment date back years and it's obvious they're from different periods, with different tenants.

I'm guessing he used it both for documenting his property and for personal use. It's always interesting getting into understanding what these were for, not just looking at the images blindly.

Here is some interesting photos i recovered:

1. Same room over years, 1999/2001:

2 IMAGES

2. Photo documenting some belongings:

3. Weird corrupt photo:

This one specifically I'm having trouble recovering, mostly because I'm not sure what its even supposed to be under all that artifacting. Will try to get more out of it soon.

Found the same place as in a photo

I took it upon myself to learn the surrounding area a bit. On one of my morning walks, I was walking past this place and just got hit with a sense of deja-vu. I snapped a picture and would you look at that, its the exact same spot as one of the pictures!

Someone keeps appearing in the photos

In the later photos there's this one person who shows up in the background a lot. Never the main focus, always off to the side or in reflections. Looks like they're watching the person taking the picture sometimes.

I think this is my apartment

Compared the photos to where I live now. It's the exact same place. Same everything. Some photos even look like they were taken after I moved in. The person in the background is in more and more of them lately.

I'm leaving tonight. Something isn't right with this place.

I can't stay here. I saw too much on that drive. If you're reading this I'm already gone. I couldn't take everything. Goodbye for th forseeable future.

Why leave me alone?

You left in such a hurry. You forgot so many things.

I don't like when it's quiet like this.
